I’ve been thinking about Numbers 15:39-41, particularly verse 39. I would encourage reading all of Chapter 15 for context.
As a biblical counselor who does a lot of work with marriages and families, I often tell couples that God wants to restore their marriage. Often, the fact that one or both partners is “whoring after” other lovers (including pornography, which is pervasive) presents a perfect opportunity to share the gospel. I will remind the couple in front of me (as well as myself) that the Bible says that a marriage broken by adultery is a picture of our relationship with God. We all “whore after” other lovers, while God patiently and faithfully pursues us. To continue to pursue one’s spouse, even in his or her unfaithfulness to the marriage covenant, is to demonstrate the faithful covenant love of God. God continues to pursue relationship with you and me, even while our adulterous hearts pursue other “lovers.” All of us are unfaithful to God, yet He remains faithful to us. (2 Tim 2:13)
What substitutes for God are you pursuing? In what ways are you spurning His faithful covenant love for you?
