“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” (Joshua 1:8)
This is not the prosperity gospel. Like virtually every other term that we use, God has a new definition for the terms “prosperity” and “success”. God isn’t concerned with our material prosperity; he is concerned with our spiritual prosperity. The nation of Israel is getting ready to enter the promised land. The Lord has transferred the leadership of His chosen from Moses to Joshua. And God is now instructing Joshua on how to successfully lead the nation to accomplish His purposes for them. In this way, they will become “prosperous” and “successful.”
Here is the Lord’s instruction to Joshua on how to be successful. Know God’s Word, spend time reading, studying and meditating upon it every day, and then do what it says. Whenever God gives us something to do, the way to insure success is to stay close to the heart of God. Right before his arrest, trial, crucifixion and resurrection, Jesus told his disciples, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” (John 14:15) Our obedience to his commandments, brings us closer to the heart of God. In proximity to the heart of God is where we will find success and prosperity.
God is far more concerned with our obedience than our achievements.
